Calories on menus… really??? Today’s new government ruling on restaurants, cafés and takeaway outlets to display the calorific content of their meals and soft drinks is - in my view - lazy, punitive and ultimately ineffective. It’s our nutritional landscape that needs to change - but the reality is that this involves tough policy mandates that require getting equally tough with the food and drinks industries.  As long as the government insists on taking the easy options by over-focussing strategy and policy on individual food choices - instead of taking responsibility for the obesogenic environment in which we have to make those choices, then the public health disaster that is obesity will continue to increase exponentially. The scientific literature is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth… right? I disagree.  Published scientific research is unfortunately now a filtered reality - heavily influenced by commercial interests. And as result, modern healthcare is - to a degree - sleep-walking through a corporate narrative. Academia has always been upheld over the centuries as the bastion of pure, scientific truth - but publication bias, witholding of raw data, loose regulation, inappropriate academic leadership and, crucially, industry funding are now driving what is researched and published and, just as importantly, what isn’t.  A recent BMJ opinion piece goes even further and claims that ‘evidence-based medicine is now an illusion’ - hijacked by self-interested, financially-driven pharmaceutical giants to the point that scientific progress is thwarted and patients are dying. It’s a big claim with massive implications… But it leads us to ask... is academia selling its soul to industry - and is human health suffering as a result?
